We are an English-speaking country but according to my good professor in linguistics (Dr.Cecilia Mendiola), we are not native speakers of the language, right sir? It is quite funny for people (those who know linguistics and grammar) seeing such errors. I do appreciate your observations. I laughed at your examples too. I think correcting or commenting on such errors may only come from those who are observant and have the license to correct them. It is the responsibility of people from the academe and, knowing Filipinos, it is quite a laugh reading such errors. I do hope I didn't commit mistakes that would make you laugh too. Hehehe. Happy new year, sir!

Reply: Your professor is right about Filipinos not being “native speakers” of the English language. And we will never be, the powers-that-be’s ill-advised push for English as medium of instruction notwithstanding. It is good to learn English, but we should treat it as a foreign language. More importantly, we should strengthen the Filipino language and the people, particularly those in government, should consider it our lingua franca. I am trying to observe all those lapses in grammar, syntax and diction to remind interested readers about the need to have a good command of the language. On a personal note, I also need to remind myself constantly of how language should be properly used. Thank you for your comments and I wish you all the best.
