Plaridel logoUP logoThe University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) will launch the ninth issue of Plaridel: A Journal of Philippine Communciation, Media, and Society on February 27 (Wednesday), 3 p.m. at the CMC Auditorium, Plaridel Hall, UP Diliman.

Edited by Dr. Fernando D. Paragas and Prof. Violeda A. Umali of the Department of Communication Research, the latest issue (Volume 5, Number 1, February 2008) carries the theme “Communication and Media Texts and Contexts.”

The articles in this issue are “In Bloom, Online: An Exploratory Study of the Philippine Cut Flower Corporation’s http://islandrose.net” (Ma. Laize-Ar Abalos et al.); “The InCredibles: Quezon City Residents’ Assessment of the Credibility of Broadsheet Newspapers and Primetime TV News Programs” (Regine Anne Ramos et al.); “Assessing the News Literacy of Public High School Students” (Katrina Kwan et al.); “The Playground Is Alive: Online Games and the Formation of a Virtual Subculture” (Mark Anthony Gubagaras et al.); “Up Close and Hyper-Personal: The Formation of Hyper-Personal Relationships in Online Support Groups” (Monik Moya et al.); “Career na ‘to! Career Anchors of Filipino Workers” (Monik Moya et al.); and “Bridging the Knowledge Gap: Dissemination of Researches of Selected Universities in Metro Manila” (Rhodora Ramonette de Villa).

These articles, according to the issue editors, “discover new insights about communication from the interpersonal to the organizational, from the mediated to the non-mediated, from traditional media to the new.” All of them were presented at the First Communication Research Student Conference held at the UP CMC Media Center on September 7, 2007.

Plaridel’s February 2008 issue also has an interview with Dale Rutstein of the Kabataan News Network (Jennifer Christine Rose Sumagui) and a review of selected qualitative analysis software programs (Maria Lucia Soria et al.).
