(Updated) Kon(tra)teksto book already out

Kon(tra)teksto front coverN.B. – This is a press release I wrote which aims to promote the first of my three books scheduled to be published this year. Please feel free to disseminate. Thank you.

A new book titled Kon(tra)teksto: Pag-uungkat, Pag-uulat at Pagmumulat by Danilo Araña Arao is already off the press.

Launched last June 11 by the De La Salle University (DLSU) Publishing House and Central Books, the book contains 50 essays in Filipino focusing on journalism, media, education, politics and economics. There are also personal essays included in the book.

In the book’s introduction, Arao stresses the need to raise discourse to a higher level, hence the need for the concept of “kon(tra)teksto,” a word that does not exist in the Filipino language but which he defines as a critical analysis of alternatives to “widely-accepted arguments” particularly of the powers-that-be. “Sa pamamagitan ng librong ito, sana’y mabigyang-linaw ang dahilan ng galit o ahitasyon ng maraming tao dahil sa panlipunang kalagayan at kalakaran,” Arao writes in his introduction.

Kon(tra)teksto is the first of three books by Arao scheduled to be released this year. The author teaches journalism at the Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines where he concurrently serves as assistant vice-president for public affairs and director of the System Information Office. He is also a columnist of Pinoy Weekly and The Lobbyist.

Copies of the book are available at the DLSU Publishing House and retail outlets of Central Books. To buy online, please go to URL http://central.com.ph/bookstoreplus/products/AAC147/.
