DANILO ARAÑA ARAO is an assistant professor of the Department of Journalism at the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) in Diliman, Quezon City. Starting February 10, 2011, he works as assistant vice-president for public affairs and director, System Information Office (SIO) of the entire UP System.
He is a member of the Board of Editors of Bulatlat, a weekly online news magazine. He writes a column in Filipino (“Konteksto”) for Pinoy Weekly and another one in English (“Subtext”) for The Lobbyist.



Prof. Arao is managing editor of the Philippine Journalism Review – the only refereed journal on journalism in Southeast Asia – published by the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR). He also serves as associate editor of the UP-based refereed journal Social Science Diliman.
With regard to his involvement with the UP CMC, he was chair of the Department of Journalism (June 2005 to June 2006) and founding director of the Office of Research and Publication (November 2003 to May 2005; April 2007 to February 2009). He was college secretary from July 2010 to February 2011.
From March 2009 to February 2010, he was on special detail as a visiting professor at Hannam University‘s Linton Global College in Daejeon, South Korea. As a member of the Philippine Resource Persons Group (PhilRPG, an organization of Filipino professors working in Korea), he wrote occasionally for the group’s column at JoongAng Daily titled “Pinoy Voices“; he also coordinated PhilRPG’s submission of column articles.
Prof. Arao was a finalist in the Jaime V. Ongpin Awards for Excellence in Journalism (Explanatory category) for his article published in Pinoy Weekly (July 23-29, 2003) titled Ang Petron, deregulasyon at desperasyon. He co-authored a book in 1997 published by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) titled The Electronic Trail: Computer-Assisted Research and Reporting in the Philippines which was shortlisted in the 1998 National Book Awards (Journalism category). Prof. Arao’s personal essay titled Oily Conspiracy was included in The Best of Youngblood published in 1998 by Anvil Publishing, Inc. and the Philippine Daily Inquirer. In 2000, he wrote a study on the impact of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) on Philippine cereals which was included in the book The Impact of the WTO Agreement on Agriculture published by IBON Foundation. He wrote a chapter on mass media and the elections in the book Subverting the People’s Will: The May 10, 2004 Elections published by the Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG) in 2004. He served as project leader of Citizens’ Media Monitor: A Report on the Campaign and Elections Coverage in the Philippines 2004 published by the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR).
In 2006, he wrote the paper titled Tracing the Roots of Killings of Journalists which was included in the book Kontra-Gahum: Academics Against Political Killings published by IBON Foundation. His article titled Elections, Personality Politics and the Mass Media was the last chapter in the book Oligarchic Politics: Elections and the Party-List System in the Philippines published in 2007 by CenPEG. A study he conducted titled Deregulation at the Expense of Quality Education was included in the book Mula Tore Patungong Palengke: Neoliberal Education in the Philippines published by IBON Foundation in 2007. As was the case in 2004, he was project leader again of The CMFR Monitor: News Media Coverage of the 2007 National Elections published by CMFR. He also co-authored the 60-page Monitoring Media Coverage of Elections: A Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) Guidebook. A paper he co-authored titled Selected Mass Media’s Reporting on Corruption was included in Dissecting Corruption: Philippine Perspectives which CenPEG published in 2007. He co-edited The 8th ASEAN Inter-University Conference on Social Development Book of Abstracts published by UP et al. in 2008. A 2001 article published in Bulatlat titled Globalizing the UP General Education Program was included in the book Serve the People: Ang Kasaysayan ng Radikal na Kilusan sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas published by IBON Foundation in 2008.













Aside from these book projects, he has written hundreds of articles published in various refereed journals, newspapers, magazines, monographs and online publications.
Given his research outputs, print, broadcast and new media organizations periodically invite Prof. Arao as a resource person. He has appeared in various television news and special coverage programs, as well as public affairs programs like Adyenda, Reporter’s Notebook, Kabataan X-press, Media in Focus, Y Speak, Debate with Mare at Pare, Viewpoint with Atty. Dong Puno, Straight Talk with Cito Beltran, ANC Breakfast, Compañero y Compañera and Today with Kris. He has also been quoted in major broadsheets like the Philippine Daily Inquirer, BusinessWorld and Philippine Star.
He also has a good standing in the journalism education community, being the lead organizer of the First National Conference of Journalism Educators in December 2006.
As a trainer, Prof. Arao has conducted seminars and workshops for the staff and officers of government agencies like the Departments of Education (DepEd), Health (DOH), Interior and Local Government (DILG) Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Tourism (DOT), as well as the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Barangay Councilors League of the Philippines, Palawan Tropical Forestry Protection Programme, Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordination Agency (PNVSCA), Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
He has also been hired as resource person by institutions like the Manila Public School Teachers Association (MPSTA), Quezon City Public School Teachers Association (QCPSTA), College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP), Institute of Social Order (ISO), Organization of Student Services Educators Incorporated (OSSEI), Philippine Journalists, Inc. (PJI), Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR), Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ), Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE), Development Center for Asia Africa Pacific (DCAAP), Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG), International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), IBON Foundation, Alyansa ng May Kapansanang Pinoy (AKAP-Pinoy), Amado V. He has also attended public hearings of the Senate of the Philippines and the House of Representatives as a resource person on pressing social issues and concerns.
Internationally, Prof. Arao has traveled to Jakarta, Indonesia seven times from 2008 to 2010 to give a seminar to journalists from Southeast Asian countries upon the invitation of the International Institute for Journalism (IIJ) of InWEnt-Germany. He also helped train the staff and officers of Consumers International (CI) and Pesticide Action Network (PAN) in Penang, Malaysia, as well as selected NGOs in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In 1995, he had a lecture tour at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia and was a resource person of the Overseas Service Bureau (OSB) in Melbourne.
From May 18 to August 11, 2007, he worked on-camera as one of the three critics of the television show Dokyu: Ang Bagong Mata ng Pinoy Documentaries which aired over ABC 5 every Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 p.m. From July to November 2007, he was a co-host of the radio program Usapang Media on DWAD 1098 khz, airing every Monday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. From April 2004 to February 2006, he was a co-host and scriptwriter of the award-winning radio program Ngayon Na, Bayan! every Friday, 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. (DZRJ 810 khz AM station). From September 2010 to February 2011, he co-hosted and wrote the script for the radio program “Sali Na, Bayan!” (DZUP 1602 khz, 2:00-3:00 p.m.) every Friday.

Prior to teaching fulltime at UP, he was editor-in-chief (1994-1999) and head of research (2000-2001) of IBON Foundation, an independent research think-tank. He also taught Political Science part-time at the De La Salle University (DLSU) from 1993 to 1995.

Prof. Arao earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communication (major in Journalism), cum laude, from UP Diliman and was adjudged Most Outstanding Journalism Student upon his graduation. He finished his Master of Arts (MA) in Philippine Studies, with High Distinction, at DLSU and was awarded a gold medal for academic excellence.
