Thanks to our University Information System (aka “CRS”), I was able to submit online your final grades even if I am currently in South Korea. Feel free to log in to CRS now to look at your grades.

J 122 TUV and J 122 TWX students: In case you haven’t done so, kindly get your graded papers from the department.

Media 120 WZZ students: Your graded final papers are still with me as of this writing. I can only send them via postal mail on April 8 (Wednesday) as I have a speaking engagement in Jakarta early next week. Since it takes about two days to reach the Philippines (this is the second time I sent postal mail to UP), please contact the department starting April 10 as to when you can pick up your papers.

For the readers of this blog, I hope you will take some time to visit the websites of my students in J 117 and J 122. They put a lot of work in their project and most of them live up to the high standards of online publication design and layout, not to mention online content. These websites were hand coded, which means that they used only a text editor in writing the HTML codes.

N.B. – This is written in Filipino so that my students in Hannam University (Korea) would know that this message is not for them. If you’re my student in Hannam University, I will post a separate message when I arrive in Korea tomorrow (March 5). Thank you.

Now it can be told: Assuming that I get a visa and book a flight within this month, I will be leaving the Philippines next month (March) and will return after one year.

If you’ve attended our class last week, you already know the “juicy details,” particularly where, why and with whom I’m going. You are now free to tell your classmates who were absent, as well as others who are interested to know.

As far as our class is concerned, this simply means that you have to religiously attend the remaining meetings in February. You already know the papers, projects and other requirements and their respective deadlines, so please submit them on time.

If you’re my thesis advisee (undergraduate or graduate level), please see me in the next few days so that we can evaluate the status of your thesis and make adjustments (if any) to your proposal or actual defense (for graduate students).

With regard to our schedule in March, we have no choice but to conduct our consultations via email or YM (unless of course you can afford the plane fare to visit me personally).

In any case, kindly visit this blog every now and then for other announcements, particularly those specific to your class.

Thank you for your attention and wish me luck!

Kindly take note that today (July 25) is the deadline for the submission of “preliminary” findings, the word preliminary defined at our orientation last June 13 as “at least 70 percent complete” (which may vary depending on the status of your thesis).

As of this writing (11:35 a.m.), only three students have passed their preliminary findings. Those who cannot meet the deadline today may have a hard time catching up so they should seriously consider dropping J 200-1 (Thesis). Incidentally, the last day for dropping courses is on September 8.

You should know that I will be out of the country twice (in July and August) and I have several speaking engagements in the coming weeks, some of them out-of-town. Since I cannot easily adjust my already full schedule in the next few months, please observe the deadlines.

Thank you for your attention.

Update (6:15 pm): Out of the seven students enrolled in J 200-1, six managed to submit their preliminary findings. Thank you for your cooperation.

J 117 (Online Journalism): Members of Group 4 will present their report. The resource links section on UP Charter Change should also be uploaded to your website before the start of our class.

J 122 (Publication Design and Layout): It will be the turn of Groups 3 and 4 to report. After the two reports, you will receive instructions pertaining to the submission of a newspaper page, newsletter and web advertisement. The first two requirements are due on February 28, the last on March 6. We will also discuss the mechanics for the finalization of your website which serves as your final exam.

February 22 (Friday)

J 109 (Writing for Popular Audiences): Kindly submit your second article. Please read the handout I gave you today (February 15) as we will use it as main reference in our discussion. We will also critique your first article.

Message to my thesis students

J 200 (Thesis): As of today, only one student has submitted an acceptable first draft which practically assures her of a passing grade (or an INC [Incomplete] at worst). If you were to refer to your schedule, you should have submitted by this time your second draft. While I appreciate that some of you periodically update me on the status of your theses, I should remind you that failure to submit an acceptable first draft before the end of the classes this semester means a grade of 5.0 (Failure).

J 117 (Online Journalism): We will critique the introductory page of your news website which will serve as your midterm exam. You should have uploaded your HTML and other graphic files before coming to class. Please remember that your output will be graded based on (1) how your introductory page’s “look and feel” complements the desired concept and content of your website; and (2) how your source code was written. Your participation in the critiquing session of your classmate’s outputs will also be graded.

J 122 (Publication Design and Layout): As is the case of J 117, the introductory page of your personal or hobby website will serve as your midterm exam. We will also analyze the strengths and weaknesses of your output. Our critiquing session will focus on your creative use of HTML tags and attributes.

January 18 (Friday)

J 109 (Writing for Popular Audiences): We will not have a class on January 18. You only need to submit your first paper (maximum word count: 1,000 words). We will continue our discussion of “popularization” on January 25.

J 200 (Thesis) students: This is just to remind you that the first draft of your thesis is due on January 25 (Friday). Only a few students have updated me on the status of their thesis, and fewer still have submitted their preliminary findings. Please keep in mind that those who fail to submit an acceptable first draft within this semester will get a grade of 5.0.

Kindly bring your Form 5 and thesis proposal.

Thank you and see you then.

For the benefit of those who are just lurking, J 200 is the required undergraduate thesis course for journalism students at UP Diliman. Its prerequisite is J 199 (Research in Journalism). Unlike other courses, J 200 students do not attend regular classes and just periodically consult with their advisers on the status of their thesis.
