Reading this article should bother all of us

Missing UP students Karen Empeño and Sherlyn Cadapan

I invite you to read a recent article on Bulatlat titled “2 Missing UP Students Tortured, Raped Inside Military Camp” written by Dabet Castañeda.

If this doesn’t bother you in any way, I’m sorry to say that there is something wrong with you. Even the most apathetic lot should feel something after reading this.

Thank you for your attention.

  1. I wrote about this las year. I was once a young activist and abductions were common back then. A colleague of mine was abducted and his tortured, twisted body was found in Laguna. I am bothered by the spate of killings and enforced disappearances. The ghosts of martial law has come to haunt us once again.

The regression continues and what is sad is the lack of action from a generation who does not fully understand the horrors of authoritarianism. Unless they themselves become victims of these brutalities, no one really bothers. This is the reason why I forced myself to blog. I would like to touch those who still turn a blind eye and has a deaf ear. Thanks for reminding us of the continuing injustices done by this administration.

Unless the people stand up and finally be counted, let us hope that these abuses do not reach their doorsteps.

Reply: Thanks for your message. What bothers me now is that I’ve dealt with some of the journalists and activists killed since 2001. The struggle for change therefore has both personal and political meaning. It’s good that you’re among the very few who blog for a cause, unlike most others who blog just for the heck of it, thereby polluting the blogosphere with their mindless meanderings. Cheers!
