Political rap, anyone?

This YouTube video was uploaded only last Saturday (August 30). It is a rap song that starts and ends with lines from an old Patatag song titled Tano.

For those who are not familiar with Tano, it’s a song about a farmer who gets heavily indebted to a landlord. Tano then decides to join the revolutionary forces. It’s not just because he was pushed against the wall; he had the realization that there is absolutely no hope for development within the political system.

In case you’re not aware, rap actually started as a form of protest in the West, a very radical departure from the current trend of self-absorption and existential angst. If you don’t believe me, try listening to The Revolution Will Not Be Televised by Gil Scott-Heron.

What the political rappers did in this particular video is therefore a reaffirmation of the nature of this music genre. In any case, enjoy the video and tell me what you think. Thank you for your attention.
