Concerned UP professors call for noise barrage, intensified mass actions against pork barrel system

noynoy pigPresident Noynoy Aquino’s replacement of the present congressional pork barrel with a new line-item budgeting system is deceptive. Instead of heeding the people’s demand for full accountability and the total abolition of the mechanism of corruption in government, Aquino has merely redirected and concentrated control of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) from the legislative branch to the executive. He further refuses to abolish the 310.1-billion Special Purpose Fund (SPF) –— resources that will be made even more monumental and vulnerable by the PDAF’s replacement.

This clearly preserves corruption  through the discretion of Aquino and his cabinet. Nor is it a genuine service to the people, but a political gimmick designed to thwart the people’s will and perpetuate the injustice that we have suffered for so long. This farce extends to the administration’s handling of Janet Napoles’s arrest, tainted by political maneuvering and interest.

The UP Faculty for the Abolition of the Presidential and Congressional Pork Barrel issues the same clarion call: Cut the crap, scrap the pork in all forms. We call for more heightened protest, driven by the success of the August 26 Million People March, which demonstrated not only our anger but also our refusal to be pawns in the business of plunder.

We urge the members of the UP community to join the continuing movement against pork!
